A towel lined bowl was never going to get you there
Most home bakers start the same way, a mixing bowl and a floured kitchen towel. It works, until the dough spreads sideways instead of rising up, sticks to the fabric, and tears apart the second you try to turn it out. A basket that is not graded or finished properly does the same thing, just with extra steps, and after a few bakes it starts to split, warp or hold onto moisture it should not.
None of that is about your technique. It is about what the dough is proofing in.
Why the basket itself changes the loaf
Think of it the way a well seasoned cast iron pan works. A properly cured, tightly woven surface stays dry and smooth, so whatever is inside it glides off clean. A rough, under graded surface holds onto moisture and grips onto whatever touches it.
AA grade rattan, tightly coiled
Hearthwell's banneton is woven from AA grade Indonesian rattan with tight, even coils, so there is no loose weave for moisture to sit in.
A splinter free, finished surface
The rattan is finished smooth, not raw, so your dough holds its shape against the ribbed pattern instead of grabbing onto rough fibers.
A linen liner for the stickiest doughs
The included linen liner adds a second layer of clean release for high hydration dough, then lifts out for easy washing between bakes.
What home bakers are saying
My first loaf out of the towel and bowl method was flat and half stuck to the fabric. My first loaf out of this basket actually looked round. That alone sold me.

I was nervous I would ruin the rattan trying to wash it. It wipes out, air dries, and the manual actually explains what I was doing wrong with my starter.

Bought this for my mom's birthday since she keeps talking about getting into sourdough. The whole kit arrived together so she did not have to go buy a lame and a bench scraper separately.

A basket that actually releases clean
No more scraping dough off the sides or watching your scoring pattern tear apart on the turn out. The tight coil weave and linen liner work together so the loaf drops free, ready to score.
Everything you need, nothing you have to track down
The banneton and linen liner, a dough whisk, a scoring lame with five spare blades and a leather cover, a dough cutter, a flexible bowl scraper and a cleaning brush all arrive in one box.
Guided from your very first loaf
The included sourdough manual, recipe booklet and baking app walk you through starter care, shaping, proofing time and scoring, built for someone who has never done this before.
Why this works when a cheap setup does not
Taller, rounder loaves
The tight, even coil of AA grade rattan holds its shape through the full proof, so the dough rises up instead of spreading flat.
Not sticking, no tearing
A splinter free, properly finished surface plus the linen liner means the crust comes away clean, not stuck to a towel or a rough weave.
Built to last for years
Lower grade rattan splits, warps or holds mold over time. AA grade rattan, properly dried and finished, is made to be washed and reused bake after bake.
One kit, not five purchases
A scoring lame, dough whisk, cutter, scraper and brush are included, so you are not piecing together separate tools from separate listings.

Questions, answered
Will the rattan hold onto mold or mildew?
AA grade rattan is properly dried and finished before it is woven, which is what lower grade baskets usually skip. Air dry it fully between uses and brush out the flour with the included brush and it is built to last for years, not one season.
I have never baked sourdough before, is this too advanced for me?
The kit includes a sourdough baking manual, a recipe booklet and app access specifically so a first time baker has a starting point, not just a basket and no instructions.
What loaf sizes fit the 9 inch basket?
The 9 inch banneton is sized for a standard 1.5 to 2 pound loaf, the most common size for a home sourdough boule.
Are the blades on the scoring lame safe to store?
The 5 spare blades come with a leather cover so they stay contained and protected in a drawer, the same way a razor blade would be stored.
How do I clean the banneton and the linen liner?
Brush out excess flour with the included cleaning brush and let the rattan air dry fully. The linen liner can be removed and washed separately whenever it needs it.
How long does shipping take?
Orders are processed within 1 to 2 days and arrive within 5 to 10 days after that.
What if it is not the right fit for me?
You are covered by a 90 day guarantee from the date you receive it.
Where does this ship from?
Orders ship from our fulfillment center once processed, within the 1 to 2 day processing window noted above.
